In a chilling turn of events that has sent shock across Enugu State, the Enugu State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of three suspected accomplices linked to a notorious native doctor, High Chief Levi Onyeka Obu, popularly known as “Ezeani.” The prime suspect is currently on the run after police operatives uncovered decomposing human remains and rescued a 13-year-old girl allegedly kidnapped for ritual purposes.
This disturbing discovery was made on Monday, May 27, 2025, following a well-coordinated raid by the police, Neighborhood Watch personnel, and vigilant community members in the Ezeagu Local Government Area of Enugu State.
According to a statement released by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Daniel Ndukwe, and made available to the public on Tuesday, May 28, 2025, the operation took place at Umuojor village in Ishiagu community around 3:15 a.m.
The rescue mission, executed by officers attached to the Umumba Police Division, led to the shocking discovery of two decomposing human bodies, one male and one female, buried in a concrete-sealed pit within an uncompleted building used as a shrine. The structure, owned by the fleeing suspect Ezeani, was reportedly the scene of gruesome ritual killings.
During the operation, a 13-year-old girl, whose name has been withheld for her protection, was rescued just moments before she could become another victim of what authorities describe as a ritual murder syndicate.
In connection with this horrifying case, police officers successfully arrested three men believed to be accomplices in the crime. The suspects are
  • Uche Kingsley Agumba (33 years old)
  • Ilo Nweze Onyedikachi (36 years old)
  • Ejike Odinwankpa (38 years old)
These individuals were apprehended at the scene and are now assisting with investigations. Their roles in the criminal operation are being closely scrutinized, and police sources reveal that more arrests may follow as the investigation deepens.

Who Is Ezeani, the Native Doctor?
The prime suspect, High Chief Levi Onyeka Obu, widely known in the community as Ezeani or by his infamous alias “E-Dey-Play-E-Dey-Show,” is said to be a well-known traditionalist and native doctor with a significant following in Enugu State. Locals described him as charismatic and influential, often seen participating in cultural activities.
However, beneath his public image, authorities now believe he was the mastermind behind a gruesome criminal network that preyed on vulnerable individuals for ritual killings.
Ezeani reportedly fled the scene just before the raid and is now declared a wanted man. The police have launched a manhunt for him and urge anyone with information about his whereabouts to come forward.

Shrine Demolished
In a swift response to the incident, the Enugu State Government has demolished the buildings linked to the fleeing suspect. The demolished structures include the uncompleted building that served as a shrine and base of operations for the alleged criminal activities.
Government officials, in a statement, emphasized that such actions send a strong message that ritual practices, kidnappings, and killings will not be tolerated in the state.

Commissioner of Police, CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa, wasted no time visiting the crime scene to oversee the ongoing investigation. He commended the efforts of the police officers, local vigilante groups, and community members who worked together to ensure the successful rescue of the teenage girl and the arrest of the suspects.
In his statement, CP Giwa said:
“This operation highlights the importance of community-police collaboration. I commend all those who made this rescue possible. We are doing everything within our power to apprehend the fleeing suspect and anyone else involved in this evil.”
The commissioner also directed the command’s tactical squads, investigation units, and intelligence teams to intensify efforts to track down Ezeani and any other accomplices who may still be at large.
The residents of Umuojor village and the broader Ezeagu LGA have expressed a mix of shock, outrage, and relief following the raid.
“I never believed Ezeani could be involved in something like this,” said one resident who wished to remain anonymous. “He was always respected, but now we see the true evil that was hidden behind those ceremonies.”
Another resident, a mother of two, said:
“We are grateful to the police for saving that young girl. It could have been anyone’s child. We must remain vigilant and report suspicious activities in our communities.”
The case has once again drawn national attention to the growing menace of ritual killings in Nigeria. Despite widespread condemnation and efforts by security agencies, ritual practices tied to greed, superstition, and the quest for power or wealth continue to claim innocent lives.
Civil society groups and human rights activists are calling for stronger legislation, community education, and harsher penalties for those found guilty of ritual crimes. The role of traditional institutions and their regulation has also come under renewed scrutiny.
With the arrest of three suspects and the rescue of the 13-year-old girl, the Enugu State Police Command is now focused on
  • Tracking and arresting Ezeani, the prime suspect.
  • Identifying any other victims or accomplices involved in the case.
  • Uncovering the full scope of the alleged ritual killing ring.
  • Providing psychological support for the rescued victim.
  • Ensuring prosecution and justice for the victims’ families.
SP Daniel Ndukwe has assured the public that updates will be provided as investigations progress.
This tragic and disturbing case is a reminder of the dark side of superstition and the consequences of unchecked criminal behavior hiding under cultural or spiritual practices. While the community mourns the victims and heals from the trauma, there is hope that the swift action of the police and government will serve as a deterrent to others.
As the manhunt continues for the fugitive native doctor, the public is encouraged to remain alert and cooperate with security agencies. Anyone with useful information is urged to contact the nearest police station or use official reporting channels.
