Nationwide Disruption of SIM Services: What Nigerians Need to Know About the Ongoing Downtime

SIM services temporarily disrupted across Nigeria due to system upgrade.”
SIM Services Temporarily Disrupted Nationwide in Nigeria | Causes and What to Expect

If you've recently tried to replace your SIM card, perform a SIM swap, or activate a new mobile line and encountered unusual delays or errors, you're not alone. Millions of Nigerians are currently experiencing a nationwide disruption in SIM-related services, and there's an official explanation behind it.
On Tuesday, July 1st, the Association of Licensed Telecommunications Operators of Nigeria (ALTON) issued a public statement confirming the temporary suspension of SIM services across all mobile networks in Nigeria. This announcement has generated concern among telecom users, businesses, and customer service centers across the country.
In this post, we’ll explain why this disruption is happening, what it means for you as a mobile user, and how soon services are expected to be restored.

According to ALTON’s official statement, the disruption is tied to a directive from the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC). The NIMC has instructed mobile network operators (MNOs) to transition to a new identity verification platform as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen national identity systems.
This migration to a new identity verification system has created unexpected technical challenges for the telecom operators, making it difficult to offer seamless SIM services such as:

  • SIM swaps
  • SIM replacements
  • New SIM activations
  • SIM upgrades
  • SIM-related registrations
The new platform is designed to improve data integrity and enhance the security of digital identity management in Nigeria. While this transition is a necessary step towards modernization, the immediate impact has been a nationwide service disruption.
In the statement jointly signed by ALTON Chairman, Mr. Gbenga Adebayo, and Publicity Secretary, Mr. Damian Udeh, the association emphasized that it is actively working with relevant government agencies to resolve the issue.
“ALTON and its member companies are collaborating closely with the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), NIMC, and other regulatory bodies to address the technical problems caused by the system migration,” said Mr. Adebayo.
He further stated that telecom providers are unable to process SIM-related requests during this period and urged customers to suspend such activities until further notice.
As of now, subscribers across all major mobile networks, including MTN, Airtel, Glo, and 9mobile, will be unable to access or perform the following:
  • SIM card replacement: Whether you've lost your SIM or damaged it, replacements are temporarily unavailable.
  • SIM swap services: Users who want to change SIMs for security or device upgrades will need to wait.
  • New SIM activation: People trying to register and activate new mobile lines will be affected.
  • NIN verification-related services: Any activity that requires linking or verifying your NIN for SIM services will likely be disrupted.
Unfortunately, no specific timeline has been given for when normal services will resume. ALTON has only stated that it will provide timely updates as the situation evolves.
In the meantime, Nigerians are advised to remain patient and avoid visiting mobile service centers for any SIM-related activities until official communication indicates a restoration of services.
The shift to a new identity verification platform is part of the federal government’s broader effort to enhance digital security, national identity accuracy, and fraud prevention. With rising concerns around data privacy, identity theft, and fraudulent SIM registration, this move is considered a crucial step in modernizing Nigeria's telecom infrastructure.
According to ALTON, once fully operational, the new platform will:
  • Improve the integrity of the SIM registration process
  • Enhance verification accuracy of National Identification Numbers (NIN)
  • Strengthen security across telecom networks
  • Help regulatory bodies track and eliminate illegal SIM-related activities
While the current downtime is frustrating for many, experts argue that it is a necessary short-term inconvenience to achieve a more secure digital future.

Here’s how you can navigate this period of disruption effectively:
1. Avoid unnecessary SIM-related visits to service centers: You’ll likely face long queues and leave empty-handed, as most services are on hold.

2. Stay informed: Follow official communications from your network provider and trusted news outlets. Avoid spreading or acting on rumors.

3. Hold off on NIN-SIM linkage requests or updates until further notice.

4. Be cautious of scams: Times like this are ripe for fraudsters to exploit public confusion. Don’t share your NIN, SIM, or personal details with unknown sources.

5. Prepare alternative communication methods: If you're depending on SIM swaps or new lines for business or emergencies, consider temporary alternatives like email or app-based calling (e.g., WhatsApp, Telegram).

Across social media platforms and telecom customer centers, many Nigerians have expressed frustration and anxiety over the sudden disruption.
For business owners, digital marketers, students, and remote workers who rely on mobile communication, the inability to perform simple SIM-related tasks has already started impacting productivity and customer engagement.
Some Nigerians have called for more transparent communication from both ALTON and the NCC, demanding clear timelines and better contingency measures for future upgrades of this magnitude.

ALTON has reassured the public that this situation is being treated as a high priority by all relevant stakeholders. Mr. Adebayo concluded the statement by reaffirming the commitment of telecom operators to delivering secure, seamless, and high-quality services to all Nigerians.
“We regret the inconvenience and ask for your patience. Our commitment to a safe and efficient telecom system remains unwavering,” he said.
The temporary disruption of SIM services in Nigeria is an unfortunate but necessary part of a wider initiative to strengthen the country’s digital identity and telecom ecosystem. While the downtime is inconvenient, it reflects the challenges of moving towards more secure and future-ready systems.
As stakeholders work tirelessly behind the scenes, the public is advised to remain calm, cautious, and connected to official updates. This situation, like others before it, will pass, hopefully with a stronger, safer telecom industry for all.
