The African Democratic Congress (ADC) candidate in the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC) chairmanship election, Moses Paul, has rejected the outcome of Saturday’s poll, alleging widespread irregularities and voter suppression.
Paul addressed reporters in Abuja on Monday, stating that the official results did not reflect the choice of voters across the council. He maintained that his supporters remain committed despite the declaration of a winner.
According to him, the election was affected by a range of issues that compromised its credibility.
Allegations trail AMAC poll as ADC’s Moses Paul speaks out
Detailing his concerns, Paul alleged that movement restrictions linked to a curfew limited voter turnout in some communities. He also claimed there were cases of altered polling unit results and interference with party agents.
He further alleged that ADC representatives were harassed at certain polling units and that vote buying occurred in multiple wards. Delays in the delivery of election materials were also reported in areas such as Kabusa, he said.
Paul drew attention to the death of Musa Abubakar at the Gwagwa polling unit, describing it as a tragic development that he believes was connected to tensions around the voting process. Authorities have not released an official statement linking the incident directly to the election.
“These actions undermine the integrity of the electoral process and erode public confidence in our democracy,” Paul told journalists.Despite rejecting the results of the AMAC poll, Paul said the campaign had strengthened his political base and energized new voters across the council. He urged his supporters to remain calm and steadfast.
Local council elections in the Federal Capital Territory often serve as a test of grassroots support ahead of broader political contests. Disputes over results can lead to legal challenges and further scrutiny of electoral procedures.
