Photos of rescue operation after Lagos building collapse. |
Early this morning, nine people were rescued from the rubble of the building that collapsed in Lagos State's Ojodu-Berger neighborhood.
It was discovered that the old building was partially occupied. There was a restaurant called Equal Right Restaurant on the main floor, but the other three floors were vacant.
As of 2:00 p.m., men from the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service and the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, or LASEMA, were on the ground trying to rescue victims. The survivors have been taken to a hospital for immediate medical care.
The cause of the collapse was still a mystery at the time of this publication.
The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service's director, Margaret Adeseye, verified the number of victims rescued. There may be more stranded victims as the rescue effort continues, she cautioned.
Adeseye said through service spokesperson Skahiru Amodu, "A three-story building collapsed this morning. Fortunately, no fatalities have been reported, and nine people have been rescued alive.
Those who were saved suffered varying degrees of injuries. They were initially cared for by Lagos State Ambulance Services, or LASAMBUS, before being taken to the hospital for further treatment.
As I previously stated, the building is three stories high. The ground floor housed the restaurant, bar, and parking lot.
"The other three stories above were not being used. It's an old building that wasn't constructed.
We have consistently underlined that buildings that are abandoned for long stretches of time are dangerous and unhealthy since they progressively deteriorate. Buildings that are vacant often have the potential to collapse at any moment.
Rescue operations and an investigation into the cause of the collapse are still in progress because we must get to ground zero to make sure that nobody is trapped in the debris. Everything is under control right now. There's nothing to worry about. Residents were terrified when the building suddenly collapsed on Saturday, as we previously reported.

The building houses the famous Equal Rights Restaurant.
According to eyewitness Femi Saheed, the incident happened at around 11 a.m. today.
As of the time of publication, men from the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service and the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, or LASEMA, who had been contacted, had not yet reached the scene.
