Lagos State Government and LASACO Assurance Partnership |
All the staff of Lagos State know that the government is taking care of them, whether they are alive or not,” Oluyomi said during the presentation.
He expressed his heartfelt condolences to the families and called for forgiveness from beneficiaries who had anticipated the payment earlier than it came. He acknowledged the difficult circumstances the families had endured, noting that the delay was never intentional but a result of internal processes that had to be diligently followed.
Mr. Oluyomi also led a minute of silence in honor of the deceased workers, praying for the repose of their souls and strength for the families left behind.
This particular government has shown over time that it values its workforce. Today, we are giving out cheques to over 510 people, totaling close to one billion Naira,” he announced.
One of the most remarkable aspects of this initiative is the significant financial commitment Lagos State has made toward insurance coverage. Mr. Oluyomi revealed that the state had already paid over N3 billion in insurance premiums in 2025 alone to LASACO Assurance Plc, which is the official insurance partner of the state.
This year alone, we paid a premium of over N3 billion to LASACO Assurance Plc for people and assets insurance,” he said.
This money is meant to serve as succor during a difficult time. Please be diligent and avoid lavish spending that may jeopardize your family’s future,” Alao advised.
His sentiments were echoed by Mr. Femi Saheed, Chairman of the House Committee on Finance in the Lagos State House of Assembly, who outlined the lawmakers’ oversight responsibilities in ensuring the executive branch fulfills its insurance obligations.
Saheed praised Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and the finance team for prioritizing the welfare of state employees, noting that civil servants should also consider enrolling in private or supplementary insurance schemes to further protect themselves and their families.
We urge beneficiaries to invest wisely and safeguard the funds they have received. LASACO remains committed to supporting Lagos State and its workforce,” Abiodun said.
This gesture is commendable. However, the responsibility now lies with the beneficiaries to use the money wisely. We have seen cases where such funds are squandered in a short time, leading to more hardship,” he warned.
The death of my husband left us in emotional and financial distress. This support gives us hope and relief. I am grateful to the Lagos State Government for not abandoning us,” she said.
Other recipients echoed similar sentiments, with many promising to use the funds to pay school fees, invest in small businesses, or complete building projects their deceased loved ones had started.

Sustaining the Legacy of Care
The disbursement of nearly N1 billion in insurance benefits is more than just a financial gesture. It is a profound statement that underscores the Sanwo-Olu administration’s commitment to the welfare of its workforce and their families.
With more batches of payments scheduled and ongoing investments in insurance policies, Lagos State continues to set a high standard in employee care and social protection.
In a nation where many civil servants retire or pass away without support, Lagos is proving that with good governance, compassion, and planning, governments can truly make a difference in the lives of their people, even in death.
The Lagos State Government’s initiative to compensate families of deceased workers is not just a ceremonial gesture; it’s a bold step in ensuring human dignity, financial security, and institutional responsibility. The hope is that this model will inspire other state governments in Nigeria to follow suit and prioritize public service welfare in meaningful ways.
