Barcelona has formally ended their involvement in the European Super League, leaving Real Madrid as the only club still publicly tied to the abandoned competition.
In a statement released on Saturday, the Spanish club said it had officially informed the European Super League organization and the remaining associated clubs of its decision to withdraw. The announcement closes a chapter that has lingered since the controversial breakaway plan collapsed in 2021.
The European Super League was launched by 12 major clubs but unraveled within days after widespread backlash from fans, domestic leagues, and football authorities across Europe.
Barcelona Moves to Repair Ties With UEFA
Barcelona president Joan Laporta had already signaled a change in direction last year, saying the club intended to restore full cooperation with UEFA. His comments in October 2025 pointed to a clear shift away from the European Super League framework and toward existing European competitions.
Financial pressure and governance disputes initially kept Barcelona aligned with the project longer than most clubs. However, the latest decision confirms the club’s commitment to operating fully within UEFA’s structures, including the Champions League.
The move matters today as European football regulators continue to enforce rules aimed at preventing breakaway competitions. With Barcelona stepping aside, the European Super League now exists largely in name, reinforcing UEFA’s position as the organizer of elite club football in Europe.
