The La Liga match postponed on Saturday has thrown fresh attention on the growing crisis at Rayo Vallecano, after unsafe playing conditions forced league officials to call off the club’s home fixture against Real Oviedo just hours before kickoff.

The game, scheduled for 1:00 p.m. GMT at the Estadio de Vallecas, was suspended following an inspection of the pitch, which failed to meet safety standards required for top-flight football.

In a statement released on matchday, La Liga said the decision was taken to protect player safety, confirming that the surface did not offer sufficient guarantees for the match to proceed under acceptable conditions.

League officials acknowledged that Rayo Vallecano had attempted to prepare the stadium for the fixture, including replacing the turf earlier in the week. Those efforts were affected by persistent bad weather, leaving the pitch unfit for play.

The postponement came one day after Rayo’s players publicly raised concerns about their working environment. In a joint statement issued through the Association of Spanish Footballers, the squad and coaching staff criticized the condition of the Vallecas pitch and other club facilities.

Players said the grass at the stadium had been in poor shape for weeks and no longer met the minimum standards expected at the La Liga level. They also complained about pre-season disruptions caused by damaged training pitches, which limited access to the club’s training ground.

The statement extended beyond the playing surface, calling on the club to improve conditions for
supporters and address long-standing infrastructure problems.

Rayo president and owner Raúl Martín Presa has been at the center of repeated disputes with fans, many of whom oppose his proposal to relocate the club away from Vallecas. The stadium’s aging condition has become a flashpoint in the wider conflict between supporters, players, and club management.

The La Liga match postponed at Vallecas now raises broader questions about stadium maintenance, player welfare, and league oversight, as Spanish football continues to enforce stricter safety standards ahead of the new season.
