FIFA has confirmed DR Congo as Africa’s representative in the 2026 World Cup inter-confederation play-offs, ending Nigeria’s hopes of reaching the tournament.

The announcement came in an official communication outlining the six teams that will compete for the final two places at the 2026 World Cup. DR Congo was listed among the qualified nations, with no change to the earlier outcome of the African play-off round.

Nigeria’s football authorities had contested the result of their November 2025 play-off against DR Congo, but the latest confirmation shuts the door on that challenge.

2026 World Cup play-offs: DR Congo listed among six qualified teams

In its notice to media ahead of the competition, FIFA confirmed that the inter-confederation tournament will feature six countries battling for the last two tickets to the 2026 World Cup.

The governing body named Bolivia, DR Congo, Iraq, Jamaica, New Caledonia, and Suriname as the participating nations.

Nigeria’s Football Federation had lodged a protest after the Super Eagles drew 1-1 with DR Congo in the African play-off before losing on penalties. The NFF argued that ineligible players were used during the tie and sought a reversal of the decision.

However, FIFA’s updated documentation makes no mention of any review or alteration to the qualified teams, indicating that the original result stands.

The inter-confederation play-offs are scheduled to begin on March 26, with New Caledonia set to face Jamaica. Bolivia will take on Suriname in the other opening fixture.

DR Congo will enter the competition on March 31, where they are due to meet the winner between New Caledonia and Jamaica for a place at the 2026 World Cup, which will be hosted across 16 cities in Canada, Mexico, and the United States.

For Nigeria, missing out on the 2026 World Cup marks another setback after failing to reach the 2022 edition in Qatar. The absence of Africa’s most decorated national team from consecutive tournaments is likely to prompt renewed scrutiny of football administration and squad development ahead of future qualifiers.
