Russia Responds to Trump’s Threat: “We’re Monitoring the Situation in Nigeria”

Russia reacts to Trump’s military threat over Nigeria.

In a significant diplomatic development, Russia has announced that it is closely monitoring the situation in Nigeria following reports that the United States may be considering military action in the West African nation. The statement came after U.S. President Donald Trump made comments suggesting that the Pentagon should prepare military options to “protect Christian communities” in Nigeria. Speaking at a press briefing in Moscow on Friday, Maria Zakharova, the spokesperson for Russia’s Foreign Ministry, addressed the issue in response to a question from Turkey’s Anadolu Agency. Zakharova stated that Russia was following the reports “very carefully” and called on the United States to act responsibly and respect international law in handling matters that could affect global peace and security.
“We are closely monitoring this issue and call on all parties involved to strictly comply with international legal norms.”
She emphasized that Russia remains committed to upholding international stability and warned against actions that could escalate tensions or set dangerous precedents in international relations.

The diplomatic tension stems from comments made by former U.S. President Donald Trump on November 1, 2025, where he announced that he had directed the Pentagon to “prepare military options” to tackle what he described as rising terrorist attacks against Christians in Nigeria.
Trump, who has long positioned himself as a defender of persecuted Christian communities around the world, stated that the United States could not ignore reports of mass killings and persecution in northern Nigeria.
“The killing of Christians must stop. If the Nigerian government fails to protect its people, the United States will take necessary action,”
The remarks sparked global debate and concern, particularly among African leaders and international observers, who cautioned that any form of military intervention in Nigeria could violate sovereign rights and destabilize West Africa’s fragile security balance.

Russia’s response underscores its growing role as a watchdog of Western interventionism, particularly in Africa and the Middle East. Zakharova stressed that any military move in Nigeria must be addressed through international diplomacy, not unilateral action.
She urged Washington to prioritize dialogue and cooperation with the Nigerian government, the African Union (AU), and the United Nations (UN) instead of unilateral military measures that could worsen tensions or humanitarian conditions.
“We call on all parties to respect Nigeria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. Any external interference without the consent of the Nigerian authorities would be a violation of the UN Charter,”Zakharova said.
Her comments reflect Moscow’s consistent position on non-interference in domestic affairs and respect for state sovereignty, principles that Russia has repeatedly invoked in response to U.S.-led military operations in other regions. Nigeria’s Strategic Importance and the Global Spotlight
Nigeria, Africa’s most populous nation and largest economy, has long been a focal point in global security discussions due to its battle against terrorism, especially from Boko Haram and the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP). While violence against Christians and other minority groups has been a persistent issue, analysts argue that external military involvement could complicate internal counterterrorism efforts and potentially trigger wider regional instability. Experts also point out that Nigeria is a key energy partner to both Western and Eastern powers. Its vast oil and gas resources make it geopolitically significant, and any conflict or foreign interference in its affairs could disrupt international markets and African regional cooperation.

Trump’s statement has caused waves across international diplomatic circles. Some conservative groups in the U.S. praised his tough stance, while global human rights organizations warned that any unilateral military action could violate international humanitarian law. The Nigerian government has not officially commented on Trump’s statement, but sources within the Foreign Affairs Ministry hinted that Abuja views such remarks as “unhelpful and inflammatory.” Political analysts suggest that Trump’s remarks could be part of a broader campaign to reassert U.S. influence in Africa, particularly at a time when countries like China and Russia are expanding their presence on the continent through trade, military partnerships, and infrastructure investments.

During the same press briefing, Zakharova also addressed unrelated regional developments, including Kazakhstan’s decision to join the Abraham Accords, a U.S.-brokered initiative to normalize relations between Israel and several Arab states. Zakharova said that Moscow saw “no immediate need to comment” on Kazakhstan’s move but reaffirmed that Russia remains committed to peace and stability in the Middle East. Kazakhstan’s participation in the accords was confirmed on Friday, a day after President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev reportedly spoke with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in the presence of Donald Trump.

In addition to the Nigeria issue, Zakharova expressed concern about rising Israeli violations of ceasefire agreements along the Lebanese border. She warned that such actions risk triggering another cycle of violence in the already volatile region.
“We convey to all parties involved our firm stance on the need to avoid actions that may trigger an escalation of violence and another round of armed conflict,” Zakharova stated.
She reaffirmed Russia’s ongoing engagement with both Israeli and Lebanese authorities, stressing the need for diplomatic restraint and regional stability. According to her, Moscow remains in constant contact with international partners and regional actors to prevent a wider conflict in the Middle East.

International relations experts note that Russia’s balanced tone reflects its strategic diplomacy, positioning itself as a neutral stabilizing power while quietly expanding its influence in Africa and the Middle East.
Dr. Ivan Pavlov, a Moscow-based geopolitical analyst, noted:
“Russia is seizing opportunities to project itself as a defender of international law and a counterbalance to U.S. unilateralism. Its response to Trump’s Nigeria threat fits this pattern perfectly.”
Meanwhile, African political analysts argue that Russia’s statement may reassure African nations that Moscow supports African sovereignty and is opposed to foreign interference under the guise of humanitarian protection.

As the diplomatic fallout from Trump’s remarks continues, the world watches closely to see how Washington, Moscow, and Abuja will navigate this sensitive issue. While Russia calls for calm and adherence to international norms, Trump’s statement has reignited discussions about the limits of U.S. power projection and the sovereignty of African nations. What remains clear is that Nigeria’s internal security crisis has once again become a global concern, linking domestic terrorism to international geopolitics. For now, Moscow says it will “continue monitoring the situation closely” and engage with relevant stakeholders to ensure that peace, dialogue, and diplomacy prevail over military confrontation.
