Governor Fubara says “no sacrifice too great” as he reconciles with Wike for peace and stability in Rivers State

In the wake of political turbulence and uncertainty in Rivers State, Governor Siminalayi Fubara has made it clear that his administration is ready to make difficult concessions for the greater good of the state. During a crucial meeting with his supporters in Port Harcourt, the governor stressed that
“No sacrifice is too great for the peace and stability of Rivers State.”
The meeting, which was held to address concerns raised by citizens and political allies following a peace agreement brokered between Governor Fubara, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), former Rivers governor Nyesom Wike, and key members of the State House of Assembly, marks a significant turning point in the lingering political crisis that has disrupted governance and development in the oil-rich state.

Over the past months, Rivers State has been embroiled in a political standoff that threatened not just the unity of its ruling class but also the stability of the entire governance structure. The face-off between Governor Fubara and his former political godfather, Nyesom Wike, created a deeply divided political environment, stalling several government activities and development projects.
The conflict led to factionalism in the State House of Assembly, uncertainty among civil servants, and confusion within the governor’s political family. The prolonged tension was viewed by many as a power struggle that risked plunging the state into deeper chaos.

Recognizing the danger that the conflict posed to national unity and sub-national governance, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu intervened in December 2023, facilitating a peace accord between the warring factions.
Governor Fubara, in his address, acknowledged and praised the president’s efforts, saying:
“We are grateful to President Bola Tinubu for stepping in at the right moment. His intervention has prevented further escalation and opened the door to reconciliation and healing in our dear state.”
Fubara emphasized that his commitment to peace was not a sign of weakness but a strategic and necessary choice made in the interest of the state’s future.
The governor’s decision to reconcile with his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, was met with mixed reactions. While some applauded the governor’s maturity and statesmanship, others, especially those who supported him fiercely during the political turmoil, felt disillusioned.
Speaking directly to those who may feel betrayed, Fubara said:
“I understand the disappointment and pain that some of you may be feeling. Many of you stood by me when it wasn’t easy, and I do not take that for granted. But leadership sometimes demands that we take tough decisions for the long-term good of our people.”
He went on to clarify that the reconciliation was not a decision made lightly or in isolation. Instead, he explained that extensive consultations were held with senior advisers, trusted political allies, and community stakeholders before the peace deal was sealed.
“No Sacrifice Too Great”: Fubara’s Vision for a Stable Rivers State
Governor Fubara reiterated his belief that leadership is not about personal pride or political gain but about service, unity, and the collective well-being of the people.
“No sacrifice is too much to make if it ensures peace, unity, and progress in our state,” he said.
He further emphasized that governance cannot thrive in an atmosphere of hostility and confusion. According to him, the people of Rivers deserve more than political drama; they deserve consistent development, quality infrastructure, job opportunities, and improved public services.
One of the major fallouts of the prolonged crisis was the delay in executing several development projects across Rivers State. From road construction to health and educational infrastructure, progress on many fronts was slowed due to administrative paralysis.
Governor Fubara expressed deep concern over the setbacks:
“Our state has lost valuable time. Projects that should have been completed are still pending. But now that peace is gradually returning, we will redouble our efforts and fast-track development.”
He assured residents that his government remains focused on delivering the dividends of democracy, and with the political climate cooling down, the state is poised to bounce back stronger.
As Governor Fubara navigates the delicate path of reconciliation and renewed governance, he has called on all Rivers people, regardless of political affiliation, to put the interest of the state first.
He urged political leaders, community heads, youth groups, and civil society organizations to support his administration’s quest for peace and development:
“We may not always agree, but we can always find common ground if we’re driven by genuine love for our state.”
He also stressed that the reconciliation effort is not about reinstating old power dynamics but about charting a new course built on mutual respect and accountability.

Following Fubara’s speech, reactions have continued to pour in from across the state. Some supporters praised his maturity and political wisdom, while others remain cautious and skeptical, fearing that the peace deal might weaken the governor’s independence.
Social media platforms have been flooded with divergent views. While some expressed relief that the crisis didn’t lead to a constitutional breakdown, others voiced concerns about the sincerity of the reconciliation between Fubara and Wike.
